  • FACTS & Treatments FOR MANY CONDITIONS. (photo by: Salym Fayed)

The purpose of this book is to give clear and simple options that homeopathy and other natural medicines have to offer for a wide variety of acute conditions. These are particularly relevant at times when traveling and also for first aid uses in the home. However, I felt the need also to include situations which are potentially more serious, especially when traveling in challenging areas. Given the limitations of conventional medicine and access to appropriate medical care, especially in more remote places, knowledge of how to treat many simple and some complex health issues is as important today as ever. Homeopathic medicine especially has a good track record in treating many of the conditions mentioned in this book. The success of homeopathy was clearly documented, first in Europe in the 1820’s and 1830’s during cholera and typhoid epidemics, as well as in the United States during the deadly flu pandemic of 1918, where statistics showed that homeopaths had a death rate of only 1.05%, in comparison with over 30% under allopathic care, and even up to 60% at times.  In the 1st World War, there was a homeopathic medical corps, staffed by 100 nurses, 22 physicians and two dentists, nearly all homeopaths.  In 1922, President Harding, whose father served as a homeopathic physician in the Civil War, hosted a convention of homeopaths at the White House.  In the late 1800’s in the United States, there were 22 homeopathic medical schools, 100 homeopathic hospitals and over 1,000 homeopathic pharmacies.

Today, homeopathy still has solutions for numerous epidemic diseases both old and emerging, as well as for many other diseases. This book is designed to give you access to some of this valuable information. The recommendations in the book however, are not designed to take the place of conventional medical care. Homeopathy can be used along with all other forms of medical care, conventional and otherwise. In any situation, the risks need to be weighed up in deciding the best course of action to take. Ideally this book will help you to be able to evaluate these risks and to know what course of action to take.

Homeopathy is a well proven system of medicine that has been practiced all over the world for over two hundred years. There are now professionally trained homeopaths and people seeking homeopathic and other natural medical care in every continent, including Africa, most of Asia, Europe, North and South America, Russia and China. If you would like to look at the developing body of research into homeopathy, you can find it at the Homeopathy Research Institute www.homeoinst.org , among other sites. For more information on organizations, please look at Chapter Eighteen which lists various homeopathic organizations and information resources.

The following chapter gives you a brief introduction to the principles and history of homeopathy and also discusses its relation to herbal medicine and natural therapies in general. When using these remedies, it is useful to have some background information about how they work. It is important to state that using homeopathic and herbal medicine does not take the place of conventional care and often both methods may be used at the same time. However, having simple and effective natural methods available can greatly help when health challenges arise. Each condition needs to be looked at carefully and if any condition in the book is potentially serious, recommendations to get a professional opinion or care are given. Two chapters are then given to the practicalities of how to use natural medicines and also in being prepared for travel. Chapter Three, in particular is important, especially for those inexperienced in traveling to developing countries.

The therapeutic chapters begin in Chapter Four with Accidents, Injuries and Trauma and cover most of the accidents and first aid situations one can experience. It also covers some of the specific experiences of travel, including jet lag and travel sickness. These are some of the most commonly experienced traumas when traveling. It is followed by a chapter on the treatment of EmotionalConditions. This chapter is given priority as homeopathy can very effectively treat emotional conditions and the connection between emotional and physical states is important to understand when using homeopathic remedies. Chapter Six focuses on Digestive Conditions, which again are some of the most commonly experienced ailments found when traveling. Ideally, many of these conditions can be avoided by taking precautions outlined in Chapter Three, but sometimes one simply can’t avoid getting sick. The following chapters after that cover a wide range of conditions including more serious tropical diseases and infections. The book is designed to be both succinct in its approach but detailed enough to cover most diseases that one could come across, not only when traveling, but also at home.

Chapter Sixteen discusses the conventional and alternative forms of prevention available for various diseases. It discusses vaccination options, their risks and potential benefits. Travelers are always recommended to get many vaccines, some of which can have side effects, making it important to be fully informed. This chapter also assesses the potential risks of many diseases by the type of travel undertaken. Not all traveling is the same and therefore the risks of getting certain diseases also vary. It is important that every person traveling knows as much as possible about the types of diseases they could face and what options are available to avoid getting them.

Chapter Seventeen gives a list of all the remedies mentioned in the book and their main symptom picture. This chapter can be used as a reference and complements the information in each chapter. Some remedies are mentioned a lot in many chapters and for many conditions. Having knowledge of the key points for the most popular remedies can greatly help in recognizing when these remedies are needed. This obviously comes with experience, but ideally this book can help in the study of important homeopathic and herbal remedies used.

The last chapter gives information on homeopathic and health resources and where books and remedies can be found. For those wanting to explore the subject more, some of these resources may be useful. I hope this book helps you in your knowledge of how to use homeopathic and herbal medicines and gives you confidence to use them, wherever you are in the world and in whatever circumstances you are in.
